Human Rights Challenges 


According to the 2018 Universal Periodic Review from United Nations, the human rights challenges in Romania relates to, among others:

  • Access to education for minority groups;
  • Discrimination on the ground of gender identity and sexual orientation;
  • Corruption in the judiciary and in the public sector;
  • Violence in prisons, incidents of ill-treatment, specially based on race;
  • Access to legal aid to vulnerable groups;
  • Gender-based violence, domestic violence;
  • Gender equality, equal pay;
  • Human trafficking, especially for the purpose of labour exploitation;
  • Access to education in rural areas;
  • Roma inclusion, documentation, access to education;

Human Rights Academy's project

The Human Rights Academy has collaborated with educational institutions in Romania since 2018.


Democratic Culture (2021-2022)

  • Aim: To boost and improve the quality of the human rights education for different target groups. 
  • Activities: To contribute with expertise in the field of human rights education. To provide examples of good practices in Norway and within the DARE network (Democracy and Human Rights Education in Europe).
  • Partners:Intercultural Institute Timisoara
  • Funding: EEA Grant.

Human rights for all (2021-2022)

  • Aim: To boost and improve the quality of the human rights education for different target groups (the youth, teachers).
  • Activities: Provide expertise on the human rights education and methods of teaching at the training sessions, workshops and publications.
  • Partners: Asociatia Europeana A Implementarii Si Apararii Drepturilor Omului Themis
  • Funding: EEA Grant

Integrated Support Network through inclusive education (2020-2022)

  • Aim: To increase the social inclusion of children of risk situation in the Ilfov, Neamt and Iasi regions; to prevent and reduce school abandonment by improving the access of children to quality, fair and inclusive education.
  • Activities: Organize study visits for experience exchange with the Norwegian partners for personnel in educational establishments and in the area of social services. Adapt teaching methodology for children at risk, obtained through the exchange of experience with Norwegian partners, in the partner schools' educational process. Develop an online manual for teachers.
  • Partners: Association for Evolution - ROTAS; “Light and Gift” Association; Centre of Economic Resources and Education for Development (C.R.E.E.D); Tunari County Council.
  • Funding: EEA Grant.

Study trip to Oslo for teachers from Romania (2018-2019)

  • Aim: Support civil society and to promote democratic values, human rights and social justice.
  • Activities: Study tour including lectures on human rights, participatory pedagogy, and visits to schools and organizations.
  • Partners: Delegation of teachers and teacher educators from Bistrita and Cluj in Romania.
  • Funding: EEA Grant.
