Human Rights and Citizenship Education for all (2018-2019)

Aim: To support development of democratic and pluralist society in the North-West of Russia through education in human rights and democratic citizenship (HRE/EDC).

To improve teachers’ competences in democracy education by providing efficient methods of teaching, which contribute to a non-discriminatory education and a more democratic atmosphere in schools/local communities in the long-term perspective.

Activities: Workshops on the methods of teaching human rights and democratic citizenship in the Northwest of Russia (Kaliningrad, Pskov, Veliky Novgorod, St. Petersburg, Murmansk, Petrozavodsk, Arkhangelsk). Target group: teachers in history and civics.
Partners: Institute of Law n.a. Prince Oldenburgsky/ School projects initiative (St. Petersburg); legal clinics/ law faculties of the Universities in the Northwest Russia; regional ombudsmen in human rights; Swedish International Liberal Centre (SILC).
Funding: Nordic Council of Ministers.

Human Rights Challenges

According to the 2018 Universal Periodic Review from the United Nations, the human rights challenges in Russia relates to, among others:

Discrimination and hate speech on the grounds of religion or belief, sexual orientation and gender identity;
Enforced disappearances, arbitrary detention, attacks and threats perpetrated by civilians or the military;
Right to fair trial, access to remedy and justice;
Freedom of opinion and expression, especially journalists, human rights defenders and political activists;
Freedom of religion or belief;
Right to association and assembly;
Access to social security and health to persons living in remote areas;
Violence against women, especially sexual violence and patriarchal attitudes and stereotypes;
Equal pay, work opportunities, and political participation for women;
Violence and ill-treatment of children in pre-trial detentions;
Protection, support and inclusion of indigenous people;
High rate of unregistered persons, especially stateless, refugees and individual from minority groups.
