– I definitely believe that human rights training, like this one in the Cidadania project, is one of the pillars for an active citizen, and that it opens doors for children and adolescents to participate in discussions about democracy, politics and the development of our societies.
This says Hylla Barbosa, volunteer and human rights trainer, after four two-hours online sessions about human rights and participatory methods were organized in the period 1st to 8th of May by the Human Rights Academy in cooperation with the Portuguese organization Associação Mais Cidadania. 25 teachers, psychologists, youth workers, volunteers and others who work with Portuguese youth, participated in the sessions which focused on the international human rights system, as well as participatory methods to teach this comprehensive subject.
The training was part of the “#Cidadania” project which which aims to promote civic education through non-formal education methodologies in Portugal. The Human Rights Academy’s trainers were Lillian Hjorth (Director) and Hylla Barbosa (volunteer). The training got good evaluations.
In Portugal, the interest of young people in politics has been successively decreasing, which lead them to often feel poorly represented by their governments. However, this does not necessarily translate into a lack of interest in citizenship topics. The uninterrupted use of technological means and connections in their daily lives leads young people to create their own ecosystem of participation and get involved in actions and campaigns generated and led by their peers.
The #Cidadania project aims to take advantage of these spaces of youth participation to promote democratic initiative and active citizenship in the public, social and individual life. With this, we hope to contribute to the recognition of citizenship as a practice of added value for the lives of young people. To achieve this aim, young people and citizenship educators (teachers, mediators, psychologist, youth workers) are to be trained to develop, in these spaces, actions and contents that assist learning about, through and for citizenship. It is in this context that #Citizenship: Human Rights Training appears. Participants who participate in all sessions, will receive a certificate and the manual #CIDADANIA" toolkit (a guide for pedagogues who work with young people to promote citizenship and human rights).
The #Cidadania project is part of the “programa Cidadãos Ativ@s”, funded by the EEA Grants program, which aims to support non-governmental organizations. The program is funded by Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway, and is managed in Portugal by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation in consortium with the Bissaya Barreto Foundation.
